Let me peel back the curtain. To get a pulse of how traders<\/a> are thinking about the current crypto landscape, it\u2019s instructive to see how this very article evolved. Originally, I had intended for it to be called, \u201cHow Traders Find Edge in Crypto Winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Except traders had a different message for me: It\u2019s no longer crypto winter. \u201cBitcoin doesn\u2019t go up +130% for 10 months straight in bear markets,\u201d the trader Adrian Zdu\u0144czyk told me over Twitter\/X DM. Zdu\u0144czyk believes the early phase of a bull market started in January 2023. \u201cMany projects keep referring mistakenly to it as crypto winter or bear market,\u201d says Zdu\u0144czyk, \u201cwhile what they mean is a slow economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

The question is more than academic. For many traders, understanding the macro environment is essential for plotting even short-term moves. It\u2019s one of the oldest saws in trading: The trend is your friend. In a climate where prices tend to go up, you\u2019re \u201clong-biased\u201d and shorting can draw blood. Vice versa in a bear market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Some traders have embraced what might be a Crypto Spring, while others are still skittish and scarred by the bear market. \u201cIt\u2019s tough for traders. We\u2019re human beings, we\u2019re emotional,\u201d says Christopher Inks, who runs the trading group\u00a0<\/span>Texas West Capital<\/a>. Inks says that for many traders who were so accustomed to the sluggish price action of 2022, \u201cthere\u2019s a recency bias, and it can be hard to get the idea that the bottom is in.\u201d Inks, like Zdu\u0144czyk, is a believer in a new bull market, as \u201cthe fact is that we\u2019ve been rallying for just about a year now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

And then there are other traders who are indifferent to the direction the wind is blowing — they\u2019ll happily go long or short. \u201cFrom my perspective, it\u2019s always a bull market. Always. We don\u2019t care about which direction the market is going,\u201d says Pawe\u0142 \u0141askarzewski, who runs the hedge fund\u00a0<\/span>Nomad Fulcrum<\/a>. \u201cDepending on the sentiment we use different strategies, and maybe go more short than long.\u201d<\/p>\n

So that\u2019s the first of two disclaimers: Not all traders trade the same way, have the same strategies, or view the market through the same lens. If they did, by definition, there would be no trades — every buyer needs a seller.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

With all of that said, here are seven strategies that crypto traders are using right now to find that most elusive and coveted term — Edge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

1. More breakouts, more signals, more trades<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\n

Adrian Zdu\u0144czyk, who runs a trading group called\u00a0<\/span>The Birb Nest<\/a>, has a certain set of rules and signals he uses to enter trades, which are often breakouts. Those signals are the same in bear or bull markets, but what changes is now they \u201clight up\u201d more than in 2022. \u201cI buy when there\u2019s a confirmed price breakout,\u201d says Zdu\u0144czyk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Often these trades fail, as Zdu\u0144czyk says his win rate is only 30%. \u201cI lose money for a living,\u201d he says with a laugh. But he keeps a tight stop loss (the max he can lose for each trade) and lets the winners run, so his 30% winners more than make up for the 70% losers. That math is the same in crypto winter or in crypto spring, but now he\u2019s spending more time in trades as opposed to sitting on the sidelines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

2. The \u201cmoonbag\u201d strategy<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This one\u2019s courtesy of Wendy O, former CoinDesker and host of\u00a0<\/span>The O Show<\/a>. If a project that she\u2019s invested in starts to \u201cmoon,\u201d she begins taking profits and then recoups her initial investment. \u201cWhatever I have left is my moonbag. I own it free and clear,\u201d says Wendy. Then sometimes she\u2019ll plunk that bag on a staking platform (if available), so she can earn passive income while she waits for it to moon.<\/p>\n

3. Correlated arbitrage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Pawe\u0142 \u0141askarzewski, who\u2019s indifferent as to bull or bear markets, shares an example of two assets that are correlated in price action. \u201cTesla goes in the same direction as NASDAQ,\u201d he says. You can then draw two price curves — one for Tesla and one for NASDAQ. \u201cIf the spread between them is growing, we can make money on the spread. We don\u2019t care if it\u2019s going up or down.\u201d That same principle can be used for the forex market (such as the spread between the U.S. Dollar and Euro) or in crypto, such as the spread between Bitcoin and something like Solana or BNB.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

4. Trading The \u201cWyckoff Method\u201d<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Over 100 years ago, a financial technician named Richard Wyckoff developed a theory that the market moves in cycles, and that understanding these cycles will give signals on when to buy and sell. They\u2019re still used by traders and are known as the\u00a0<\/span>Wyckoff market cycle<\/a>. Christopher Inks studies the charts and uses these cycles to guide his setups. \u201cMy edge is really this understanding of market psychology,\u201d says Inks. \u201cBeing able to read price action and volume.\u201d Inks says these cycles occur on both the longer horizons (weeks and months) and even on the shorter timeframes (minutes). This helps clarify the direction of a trend, says Inks, \u201cand one of the best things traders can do is trade in the direction of the trend.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Trade more than just crypto<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\n

Many crypto traders are also stock traders and forex traders, hunting for the best setups wherever they may appear. \u201cWhy limit yourself?\u201d says \u0141askarzewski. \u201cWhy limit yourself to only the crypto market if you can also make money somewhere else?\u201d \u0141askarzewski\u2019s firm frequently shifts capital from crypto to oil to Tesla to gold and back to crypto, and yes,\u00a0<\/span>the tokenization of RWAs is part of that larger strategy.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe role of tokenization is 100% important,\u201d says \u0141askarzewski, adding that his firm will be launching its own RWA token in January, allowing more investors to buy into the fund.<\/p>\n

6. Use leverage with caution<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Several times in our call Wendy O stressed that none of this is financial advice — so I\u2019ll repeat that message here — and added that she doesn\u2019t personally use much leverage. \u201cIf I do, something like 2X or 3X, max,\u201d says Wendy. \u0141askarzewski agrees, noting that over-leverage is one of the ways that rookie traders get crushed. \u201cThey do a 1-to-100 leverage and the market moves 1% in the wrong direction and they lose everything,\u201d says \u0141askarzewski.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

7. Scalping<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

An oldie but goodie, and a key part of Nomad Fulcurm\u2019s toolkit. \u201cWe have night scalpers and day scalpers operating on different timeframes,\u201d says \u0141askarzewski. \u201cHours, minutes, and quarter-hours.\u201d The basic principle: You identify a range where the price has been yo-yoing — let\u2019s say it tends to bounce up when it hits $15 and then gets \u201crejected\u201d (moves lower) when it hits $20. There are a ton of sophisticated metrics (often focusing on volume) that help refine the criteria, but the idea is that you buy at $15 and then sell at $20, rinse and repeat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
